A Stir The Pots Post
Hot Dog

My father’s family were working class East European Jews who came to America and settled in the manufacturing towns of upper Connecticut. Typical of those who lived through tough times, they were often focused on strategies and morality of saving (and counting!) money.
I still remember a scene from childhood where my cousin scolded a hapless supermarket cashier for relying solely on a cash register to count her change. The poor woman got a mouthful from my cousin for keeping her eyes on the readout from the machine rather than focusing on the pennies in her drawer.
Recently grocery shopping at Costco I thought of my extended family and their deep appreciation of “a great deal.” More specifically, I thought of how much they would have gloried in Costco’s $1.50 hot dog. Not just a hog dog but a soda with free refills too!
Honestly, I usually pass on any in store food courts as it’s rare that they inspire my eye or belly. But I have to admit that Costco’s Kirkland hot dog was delicious. No bad aftertaste in mouth or pocket. Seriously worth a visit. It might remind you of your own family stories around saving money. Or just be a genuine cheap but happy meal.
