Visiting New York's Upper East Side, I visited what was once known as German Town, a roughly-10 block area between 79th-89th and east of Third Avenue. It once was home to some great German bars, restaurants, and food markets, an area I'd periodically visit with my brother for beer and sausage. Today you can get there via the new Second Ave Subway but you'll not find much German-foodstuffs, outside of the classic store, Schaller & Weber. Here are some photos. It's worth a trip.
Sourdough Croissants
I love croissants. I love everything about them. Their layers of texture, from their crispy outside to their buttery...
A pity that those places are gone. What I have experienced as German cuisine in the US so far, was only rudimentary German-ish (except for Schulte & Herr in Portland/ME).
Are those sausages Landjäger? I use Grünkern sometimes in breads. Apfelkraut was never one of my favorites, I much prefer Pflaumenmus. Nothing better than a Paulaner on a hot summer (or cold winter) evening.
Schaller and Weber was the last of an era! What a great share.
